Avon Old Farms School – Pope Quadrangle Historic Walkway Restoration

Avon, CT

The Pope Quadrangle walkway restoration returned this historic quad to its original design, replacing old pavement with bluestone walkways to honor its founder’s vision.

The restoration of the Pope Quadrangle at Avon Old Farms School returned this iconic part of the campus back to the original design and vision of its founder and architect, Theodate Pope Riddle. Originally founded in 1927, the school is listed on the Connecticut State Register of Historic Places.

The project restored the historic walkways by replacing the old bituminous pavement with new bluestone walks, carefully designed and detailed with guidance from historic photographs to honor the original design intent. The project also addressed drainage improvements, including re-grading and the rehabilitation of existing drainage structures. In addition, the redesign improved accessibility by providing ADA-compliant access and connected the quadrangle seamlessly to the surrounding dorms and campus.
