Charleston, SC
Revitalization of a notable downtown center through careful planning and context-sensitive design, blending new mixed-use development into one of America’s oldest historic districts.
Charleston Place is a shining example of how thoughtful design can bring new life to a storied city. Nestled in the heart of Charleston’s treasured historic district, this dynamic development weaves together a major hotel, conference facilities, retail, and a 440-car parking deck — all without compromising the city’s distinctive charm. The development plays a key role in revitalizing the local economy and energizing the downtown area while respecting and enhancing its surroundings. In one of America’s oldest historic districts, the project involved extraordinary public and private interaction and a complex approval process. Through collaboration and vision, it serves as a model for effective context-sensitive design.
To preserve the neighborhood’s scale and character, thoughtful design strategies were incorporated like façade setbacks and the restoration of landmark buildings to mask the interior parking structure. Every detail — from material choices to building proportions — was carefully considered to ensure the development blends harmoniously into the surrounding historic fabric of Charleston.
