Downtown New Britain Complete Streets Master Plan

New Britain, CT

The Complete Streets Master Plan provides design standards and cohesive streetscape elements to enhance pedestrian access, livability, and civic spaces.

As part of an overall Downtown Development Plan to support investment and job growth in Downtown New Britain as a mixed-use urban environment, the Complete Streets Master Plan serves as a guide for creating a more pedestrian friendly, attractive and livable environment throughout the downtown area. Designs were developed for key urban spaces and streetscapes with a focus on improving pedestrian access. A major component is the redesign and development of Central Park, the City’s most significant urban space, for a variety of civic events and daily enjoyment. As the new southern terminus of the CTfastrak system, Connecticut’s bus rapid transit system, the Master Plan creates the opportunity for the City to build a solid foundation as a transit-friendly community.

Richter & Cegan developed streetscape design standards, details and specifications, creating a palette of materials and design elements for a more cohesive approach to future development in the downtown core. Pavements, furnishings, plantings and other streetscape amenities tie together and reinforce an overall image for the downtown streetscape. Building upon the strong role that public art plays in the City, the Master Plan incorporates the expansion of public art installations, to provide permanent and rotating destination attractions for visitors to New Britain.
