Hartford Connecticut Temple
Farmington, CT
Thoughtful site design, detailing, and native and seasonal plantings complement the classic Temple architecture.
The Hartford Connecticut Temple is the first temple in Connecticut for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving members from Connecticut, Rhode Island, southwestern Massachusetts, and eastern New York. Collaborating closely with the architects, Richter & Cegan developed a site design that embodies the client’s vision to reflect traditional New England architecture and landscapes, blending the new temple and site into the surrounding town of Farmington.
The site preserves the existing ecosystems by maintaining existing water volume to nearby wetlands and creating a significant landscape buffer to the adjacent natural resources. Native plant species dominate the plant palette, while changing seasonal plantings ensure year-round color and visual interest. Throughout the 11 acres, the site design and landscape elegantly reflect a traditional New England style by creating various garden rooms and paths for visitors to experience while complementing and reinforcing the Temple architecture. A landscaped entry boulevard leads to the main Temple entrance, while formal courtyards highlight the four building facades. The custom designed stone basin with cast bronze fountain and stone walls reflects typical New England classical detailing.
