A revitalized park center transforms this historic landscape into a vibrant, pedestrian-focused destination that celebrates nature, community, and cultural heritage while strengthening its connection to the surrounding environment.

Mohegan Park has provided visitors with a varied experience of woodlands, water features, play areas, picnic pavilions, a rose garden, and more for over one hundred years. Working with the City of Norwich and their Park Advisory Board, Richter & Cegan was responsible for the planning, design and construction administration of the park center improvements. The design intent for the 30-acre park center creates a “sense of place” – a clear pedestrian-oriented destination and gathering place.

This major gathering area overlooking Spaulding Pond now provides an ideal setting for special events and exhibits with a cast iron fountain as the focal point. The park center design also includes an Arbor Walk, Memorial Overlook, Waterside Promenade, Mohegan Tribute Area, New Zoo Entrance and significant parking and circulation changes. With views of Spaulding Pond, the waterside promenade takes full advantage of this major water feature integrating the pond into the park center. Careful selection of plantings increases the diversity of vegetation and overall park visibility and uniqueness while complementing the historic Rose Garden. Native plantings transition to the more natural areas of the park.
