University of Connecticut – Various Projects

Campus landscapes that enrich campus environments and advance long-term planning goals for the university and its students.
Richter & Cegan has provided landscape architectural services for a wide range of campus projects, each designed to align with campus-wide design standards and support long-term master planning goals. The work reflects an understanding of campus character to ensure that every space contributes to a cohesive and enriching campus environment. Projects include the South Campus Commons, Monteith Hall Renovations, the Bio-Science Complex, the Gentry Building NEAG School of Education, the Center for Undergraduate Education, South Parking Garage/Co-Op Building, East Dormitories Renovations, and other miscellaneous projects.
The South Campus Commons anchors the South Campus District on the site of the historic Faculty Row. Pedestrian walkways are naturally integrated with the existing trees and spaces for small and large gatherings. The overall design promotes active and passive recreational opportunities while level terrace spaces were created within the overall grade change of over 25 feet. A central design focus was the preservation of and planning for the succession of the existing canopy trees.
The UConn Bio-Science Complex with a central elliptical courtyard and entry grove provide inviting gathering spaces, connecting the new entry quadrangle to nearby landmarks like the Dairy Bar. The Co-Op Building features the campus bookstore, retail bank, cafe, and an eight-level parking garage with space for 1,500 vehicles. An outdoor plaza with seating and furnishings offers a welcoming space for students to gather and socialize. The Center for Undergraduate Education and the Gentry Building frame the entrance to the North Academic Way, with the site elements like plazas, steps, and plantings enhancing both function and community interaction.
