Irvington, NY
A historic landscape, reimagined for the future.
What began as a practical need to manage stormwater more effectively evolved into a thoughtful transformation of this historic property located in the Hudson River Valley. Drainage issues were not only resolved but leveraged as an opportunity to revitalize the site by tactfully regrading the yard and pavements, and integrating stormwater retention with decorative permeable paving. This site is a celebration of landscape as both solution and art — rooted in history and designed for lasting impact.
Reestablishing the historic circular driveway with a new circulation pattern allows parking to be discreetly incorporated to remove cars from the front of the house, restoring the home’s original visual presence. Circuitous paths around the home lead to an overlook terrace and central staircase framed by brick seat walls that invite views across the open backyard, offering a serene connection to the outdoor space. Lush plantings were respectfully sited to feel instantly established and to seamlessly blend with the character of the surrounding neighborhood.
Drawing inspiration from the home’s original 1907 design, the landscape honors its architectural heritage with a carefully curated selection of traditional materials that echo those used over a century ago. A rebuilt north porch reflects the scale and spirit of the original space to reinstate vital architectural elements that had been lost over time.
