Modern renovation meets lakeside living, blurring the boundary between indoor and outdoor respite.

This lakeside project began with a simple goal of connecting the home to the lake, both by creating direct indoor/outdoor connections as well as improving lakefront access across a steeply sloped property. The existing back deck was reimagined and expanded, incorporating a new lower-level addition to the house with an indoor recreation space that seamlessly connects to the outdoor overlook terrace. The result is a cohesive, multi-level environment that enhances the lake experience by providing unique indoor and outdoor rooms and preserving downhill and lakeside viewsheds.

The primary site challenge was navigating the significant grade change while maintaining both functionality and aesthetics. To harmonize with the natural surroundings and be sensitive to other properties on the lake, native boulders are strategically placed to retain the slope while introducing a rustic contrast to the clean, modern lines of the granite paving and contemporary architecture of the home. Natural granite steps and handrails connect the upper terrace and lakeside terrace, with a secondary turf path providing flexible access options for the homeowners. The preservation of existing vegetation was prioritized in the design to soften newly installed site improvements.

This reimagined lakeside landscape strikes a balance between modern elegance and natural beauty — transforming a steep hillside into a layered retreat that invites year-round enjoyment and provides the desired amount of privacy and uniqueness.
