The Landscape Master Plan and phased improvements restore and enhance the landscape of Hartford’s oldest historic site while honoring and celebrating this unique landmark.

The Ancient Burying Ground is Hartford’s oldest historic site (ca. 1640). To restore and enhance the natural beauty of this Hartford landmark and help preserve the historic markers, Richter & Cegan developed a Landscape Master Plan and oversaw the phased implementation of critical site improvements that were identified during the master planning process to rehabilitate the cemetery.

The original Master Plan features include a new Main Street entry plaza with education opportunities, walkway and drainage improvements, planting enhancements to screen views and highlight unique site features, and lighting and fencing improvements for safety and consistency with the site character.

To address ongoing drainage concerns, the first phase of implementation saw natural stone permeable pathways installed over a new underground drainage system to improve visitor access while preserving the natural state of the historic cemetery. Other Phase One improvements include wall restorations, new entry stairs, fencing, security gates, benches, lighting, and plantings. An expanded Main Street pocket park with donor pavers, seating, and plantings helps integrate the Ancient Burying Ground into the larger city landscape.
